P0446 Diagnóstico de falla –Sistema EVAP/P0446 EVAP System Diagnostic –2007 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT

“Diagnosing isn't about replacing parts; it's about measuring, analyzing, and confirming.” Diagnosis of code P0446 – EVAP System / P0446 EVAP System Diagnostic – 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT V8 - 5.3L 5328cc 325ci FLEX MFI VIN 0 Type LMG - 2-valve OHV. In this case study, we have a 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500 with the Check Engine light illuminated and code P0446 – EVAP Vent System Performance. The vehicle operates normally, but the EVAP monitor does not complete, indicating that the system is not venting correctly. EXPLAINING THE CODE The P0446 code in General Motors indicates that the EVAP system cannot vent or seal properly during the leak test. The main component involved is the EVAP canister vent valve, located near the fuel tank. STEP 1 – ROAD TEST WITH LIVE DATA A road test was performed to bring the engine to operating temperature and observe the live data from the EVAP system. During the test drive, the behavior of the vent valve was monitored, and it was observed that it never changed state, which gave us an initial indication of a possible failure. STEP 2 – POWER SUPPLY TEST Subsequently, an electrical test was performed on the vent valve connector. Using the multimeter in DC voltage mode, a reading of 12.4 volts was obtained, confirming that the power supply circuit is functioning correctly and the fuse is not blown. STEP 3 – COIL RESISTANCE TEST The valve was disconnected from the harness, and the internal resistance of the coil was measured with the multimeter in ohms mode. The reading obtained was 0.021 ohms. Measured Value Expected Value 0.021 Ω 20–40 Ω approximately “This value indicates an internal shorted coil, since a good valve should be approximately between 20 and 40 ohms.” TECHNICAL EXPLANATION A shorted coil causes out-of-range current draw, preventing the PCM from properly controlling the valve. As a result, the EVAP system cannot seal or vent during the test, generating code P0446. NOTE ON CONTINUITY VS. RESISTANCE It is important to mention that a continuity test is not sufficient to diagnose a coil, as it only indicates electrical flow and not the actual resistance value. A measurement in ohms is what confirms the component's condition. FINAL DIAGNOSIS Based on: ✔ Code P0446 ✔ 12.4 volt power supply present ✔ 0.021 ohm coil resistance It is confirmed that the EVAP vent valve is defective due to an internal short. RECOMMENDED REPAIR The repair consists of replacing the vent valve, replacing the vent filter, and checking the EVAP lines to ensure they are not obstructed. Afterward, the codes are cleared, and the drive cycle is performed to complete the EVAP monitor. LESSON PLAN This case demonstrates the importance of performing a complete electrical diagnosis before replacing components. Simply reading the code is not enough; it is necessary to measure voltage and resistance and understand the operation of the EVAP system to arrive at an accurate diagnosis.
