A vast trading empire blossomed during the “Little Ice Age” of the 1600s, bringing great wealth to the Dutch Republic and neighboring Flanders. Curator Betsy Wieseman explores meticulously detailed landscapes, seascapes, still lifes and portraits in this introduction to Clouds, Ice and Bounty, the National Gallery’s small show of 27 paintings by artists of the time.
