Tritones are intervals consisting of three tones. They come in two types: the augmented fourth (A4) and the diminished fifth (D5). Tritones are sharp-sounding dissonant intervals. They sound the same, but are written differently. An A4 has 4 steps, while a D5 has 5. Tritones can form in natural and harmonic modes and be built on specific steps in a key. An A4 in a minor key is built on the 4th and 6th steps. A minor tritone is built on the 7th (raised) and 2 degrees. Tritones consist of unstable tones and therefore must be resolved. An augmented fourth (aug4) resolves to a sixth (the tones diverge to the nearest stable degrees). A diminished fifth (diminished fifth) resolves to a third (the tones converge to the nearest stable degrees). How to construct a tritone from a tone and resolve it? It's simple: 1. Construct a tritone from a given note according to the interval structure. Count 3 tones and 4 (5) degrees. 2. Imagine the root (lowest note) as a degree in a specific key. For an augmented fourth: IV in natural major IV in harmonic minor VI in harmonic major VI in natural minor For a diminished fifth: VII in natural major VII# in harmonic minor II in harmonic major II in natural minor 3. Resolve the tritone into the resulting key, taking into account the key signatures
