La Huella Hídrica

The Water Footprint Series: Engineering on Radio 3 Recording Date: February 20, 2018 Water management is a fundamental factor for achieving sustainable development. But how do we measure sustainability when we are referring to water? For this, there is an environmental management indicator called the Water Footprint. It is a necessary variable that tells us how much water it costs to manufacture a product. The concept originated in 2002 and could be defined as the total volume of freshwater used to produce the goods and services consumed by an individual or community, or produced by a company. It is an interesting concept for achieving the efficient use of water resources. Depending on the type of water we are considering, there are different types of Water Footprint identified by three colors: green, blue, and gray. In this program, we explain what each of these designations means, and we will explore this concept, its calculation, evolution, and trends.
