▽▽ Expand description ▽▽ The ephemeral lake of Palazzo Borghese, or Sasso Borghese, is located in the heart of the Monti Sibillini National Park. It is a natural lake that forms every spring following the melting of winter snow. Depending on the amount of snow, it can form between April and May and last between one and two months. The lake can be reached from both the east and west sides. From the east side, take the path from Foce di Montemonaco towards Laghi di Pilato and then turn up to the right. From the west side, there are several trails. One starts below Castelluccio di Norcia and one from Fonte San Lorenzo. Both pass by Capanna Ghezzi and climb to the Palazzo Borghese pass, before descending back towards Foce. The shortest and easiest route starts from the Monte Prata parking lot, which is illustrated in this video guide. A 7-kilometer route with about 700 meters of elevation gain leads to the ephemeral lake of Palazzo Borghese.
