The House of Cobwebs — George Gissing | A Room for Three Months
A young writer needs three months to finish his book. He has almost no money. What he does have is stubbornness, and that may have to be enough. On an ascending road, he finds three abandoned houses. The windows are boarded. The gates are broken. Behind them, a garden has gone its own way. Inside one of those houses lives Mr. Spicer, who owns the place for now, though ownership has not brought him much comfort. He has a concertina, a cupboard of old books, and a deep respect for anyone who writes. George Gissing’s The House of Cobwebs follows two men trying to make a little space for themselves inside poverty. The story is sad, but it keeps letting light in. And then there are the Jerusalem artichokes.
