What Happens When Communities Own Their Forests? | Azim Premji University

For generations, forests have shaped the lives, livelihoods and culture of Adivasi communities in Bastar. Today, Community Forest Rights (CFR) under the Forest Rights Act are enabling Gram Sabhas to protect, manage and sustainably use these forests. This film follows communities in southern Chhattisgarh as they strengthen local self-governance through Community Forest Rights. From restoring forests and conserving biodiversity to creating livelihoods through eco-tourism and reducing migration, it highlights how collective action is helping build a more sustainable future. Through the voices of community members, the film explores how forest rights, democratic decision-making and community-led conservation are transforming both livelihoods and local governance.
