Dr. habil. Axel Kleidon studied physics and meteorology at the University of Hamburg and continued his studies at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, USA. From 1994 to 1998, he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. In 1998, he received his doctorate from the University of Hamburg with a dissertation entitled "Roots and Climate: Determining Their Significance Through Model Simulations." From 1998 to 2000, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University, and from 2001 to 2006, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland. He is a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena.
