Last week on “Castle,” Det. Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) almost died at the hands of a deranged serial killer who tried to blow her up with a strategically placed bomb. Fans freaked out — “ohmigosh, they killed Beckett!” — and, as it turns out, so did some of Katic’s family members. Katic, 31, recalls taking her 10-year-old cousin to a recent TV festival where they screened the two-part episode featuring the near-death-scene in question. “One of the producers stayed with him and afterwards she said to me, ‘I really think you need to go sit down with your cousin. He’s really disturbed about the explosion, he’s really concerned.’ “So the whole taxi cab ride home, I had to convince him that everything was going to be okay and that Kate jumped into the tub at the end. I thought that was just so sweet to have a little cousin be that invested in my character. It was really heartwarming.” No doubt that’s especially true considering that Katic is “the black sheep” of the family. “I’m the only one who entered into the circus lifestyle [of acting],” says Katic, the eldest of six kids. While her parents, who still own a furniture store outside of Chicago, might’ve been puzzled by her career choice, they’re still “her biggest fans,” she says. And they’re just two of the 13 million viewers that tune in to “Castle” each week to watch Beckett and fly in her ointment mystery writer Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) solve crimes and engage in a highly amusing will-they,won’t-they dance. Now in its second season, the series has managed to avoid the dreaded “Moonlighting” curse by wisely limiting Beckett and Castle’s relationship to one-sided flirting — mostly on Castle’s part. “There’s still a lot more exploring that Beckett and Castle have to do,” Katic says. “We’ve really only touched the surface of Castle, we’ve only really unpeeled a couple layers of Beckett. I’m sure that we’ll explore more of their storylines before [they wind up together].” Until then, “what’s better to watch than that fabulous swordplay?” Katic says. The latest relationship roadblock will show up later this month, when Fillion’s mystery writer finally gets a real rival for Kate Beckett’s affections in the form of strapping love interest Tom Demming (Michael Trucco), a fellow NYPD homicide cop. “He’s another space boy,” Katic says, referring to Trucco and Fillion’s respective nerd-convention favorite roles on “Battlestar Galactica” and “Firefly.” “We’ve had an opportunity to see it a few times in her personal life, so [Tom Demming] opens up the door even further to seeing the private side of Kate’s character might involve revelations about a previously unknown wild-’n-crazy streak — a case of art imitating life. “I’m definitely far more criminal than she is — I’m a lot wilder and [more] creative,” Katic says of herself, declining to specify exactly what she means by that. One thing that Katic is happy to reveal is her love of working with the series’ many guest stars. “It’s such an honor to have film actors come on set and play a character for a week-and-a-half because these guys are on fire,” she says. “To be able to throw down scenes with some of them, like Michael Ironside, is fantastic.
