Bordado pelo mundo, com Isabella Brandão

Isabella Brandão, an embroidery teacher with a master's degree on the practice of embroidery in Belo Horizonte in the 20th century, is launching a new series of five videos, "Embroidery Around the World," which showcases the characteristics of embroidery made in other countries. In the workshops, she discusses the historical background and cultural characteristics of each embroidery style, concluding with practical exercises, teaching the application of stitches and materials. In this video (the inaugural lesson), she teaches how to transfer a design from paper to fabric and demonstrates the techniques of Portuguese embroidery, discussing its relationship with Brazilian embroidery and teaching how to make a "lenço dos namorados" (lovers' handkerchief). Although embroidery is commonly considered a unique manual skill, it expresses itself in varied ways according to the economic, historical, cultural, and environmental aspects of each society. The way people organize themselves, their forms of leisure, their social interactions, the raw materials and natural resources available, all leave their mark on the characteristics of the embroidery produced in each place. For this reason, it is possible to visit chapters of global history through the workings of threads and needles. The series "Embroidery Around the World" aims to delve deeper into some of these aspects.
