Hello, friends! It's Karl, a landscape designer, with me. Today I'll show you how I transformed a dirt pit into a 300-square-meter natural pond. The water level in the pond needs to be as constant as possible throughout the year. The pit's water level fluctuates by up to one meter, depending on the weather and time of year. Rainwater occasionally refills the pit, but especially during the warm summer months, not much water remains. The situation here is truly challenging, as the main line of sight from the property falls directly on the pit with the water. To minimize water level fluctuations, I first connect the rainwater drainage to the pit. For this, I use 80m of 150-gauge pipes. The pipes are laid at an angle so that rainwater flows from the ditch toward the pond pit. However, I choose a slight slope so that water can easily return from the pond back to the ditch, and the pond does not overflow. I also connected all the roof gutters to the pipe. This way, rainwater is used most efficiently, and the pond quickly refills when it rains. Now, trees, bushes, and grass have been cut down and removed within a 3-meter radius around the pond, so the pond's edges can be reconstructed. Since the pond doesn't have a liner and is fed only by rainwater and groundwater, the water level will still be low. Therefore, I decided to create a steeper bank. This steeper bank will ensure that the pond's surface area remains nearly the same even with fluctuating water levels. It took me almost a day to complete the project with a mini-excavator weighing nearly two tons. The center of the pond is about 2 meters deep, while the edge is now about 40 cm deep. This type of natural pond works best in soils with a high proportion of fine particles, such as clay or loam, which provide low water permeability. This design can be used in any case, even with a high groundwater table. Natural springs or streams on the property are ideal for making a natural pond. Now it's time to level and seed the soil around the pond. I also added aquatic plants from surrounding lakes to the new pond. This way, you can save money and still have native plants. It's important not to destroy the lake from which the plants are being used. It's best to take only small plants and shoots, as they will quickly spread in their new habitat. If you need to add fish to the pond, it's important to wait until the plants have spread and the biological balance has been established. Also, don't overstock the pond. Since this is a natural pond without filters or pumps, I only use 10 fish. When feeding the fish, remember that any excess nutrients added should be broken down by the pond itself. If there are too many nutrients, algae problems may occur, and the fish may suffer. I placed a few stones and a tree root with moss from the forest near the pond. Using local materials creates a natural look and simply looks good. When it comes to decorating, less is more, as this way we can maintain a harmonious atmosphere. This pond requires virtually no maintenance. In the fall, we just plant some plants and grass around it, and that's it. I hope this video was informative and helpful. If so, please like and comment.
