Its performance allowed it to tackle a beautiful, winding road at a pace not far removed from that of a sports car of the time. 50 years have passed, and the hot hatch recipe—the one that can make a normal car sporty—continues to appeal to enthusiasts, even in a market where these types of cars are increasingly rare. Volkswagen, however, continues to believe in the Golf and pays homage to its history with a special version, the Golf GTI Edition 50. It is the most powerful Golf GTI ever (325 hp), which I was able to test drive for the first time. The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 is recognizable not only by its celebratory logos on the rearview mirrors and spoiler, but also by the burnished "VW" logos and the black roof, mirror caps, and exhaust tips. Five exterior colors are available, including Tornado Red and a new Dark Moss Green. The green color also appears on the seats, with the traditional tartan pattern on the side bolsters, paired with the red of the front seat belts. This color is echoed in the accents on the aluminum pedals, leaving the anodized black used for the exterior logos on the bodywork for the interior door handles. The Edition 50 version pays homage to the birthday of the Golf GTI, the forefather of all hot hatches, with a starting price of €54,700, placing it between the €46,350 for the 265 hp Golf GTI and the €62,700 for the 333 hp Golf R 4Motion.
