The French pair Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron won the ice dance event at the Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics. A tightly contested competition was expected on Wednesday evening, as the French entered the free dance with a lead of less than half a point over the American duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates, winners of the previous three world championships. Fewer than five points separated the top five pairs. Based on the results of Monday’s rhythm dance, the 20 qualified teams skated their free dances in reverse order. Among the final five duos, Italy’s Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri took to the ice first and moved into the lead with a strong performance. The British pair Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson, who followed them, made mistakes and slipped three places as a result. Canadians Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, who were third after the rhythm dance, were already assured of a medal after their free dance, before the final two pairs took the ice with the gold medal at stake. In the end, the French received almost one point more for their free dance than the Americans, securing the victory.
