I Nearly Died on Aconcagua - Here's What I Learned
Aconcagua, located in the Andes Mountains of Argentina, is the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere, and as with any high mountain, it presents inherent risks to climbers. However, Aconcagua is not considered one of the most dangerous mountains in the world. In this video I review my own video called The Power of The Mountain: The Spirituality of Advenure, which I filmed in 1993. I share the lessons learned in having come very close to the edge. As an assistant guide I had worked too hard and breathed in too many fumes from the stoves in our tents. When I returned to Aconcagua in 2009 five people had lost their lives, including an Italian guide, who died on the summit of the mountain in a white out storm. The main risks on Aconcagua are related to the high altitude and the extreme weather conditions that can occur at any time of the year. Altitude sickness is a common issue for climbers on Aconcagua, and can be life-threatening if not properly managed. Other risks include frostbite, hypothermia, falls, and avalanches.
