In this twenty-first lesson, we'll learn how to talk about our weekend and the present perfect tense. Let's see how Veronica spent the weekend. Veronica went out on Friday evening, went to Piazza Yenne, and met some friends. They went for an aperitif at a bar, then ate at a restaurant. After dinner, they took a stroll downtown and ordered something to drink at another bar. It was a lovely Friday evening! On Saturday, her foreign friends arrived: Mark from England, Erika from Poland, Anne and Sophie from France. Veronica received many gifts from her friends: from Mark, she received a box of English tea, from Erika, a bottle of Polish vodka, and some perfume from her French friends. They all walked around the historic center together, starting at 10 in the morning and finishing at 6 in the evening. They saw many things, including the Cathedral, the Elephant Tower, and the Bastion. Afterwards, they went to eat at a restaurant and then went dancing, so they returned home very late. In this brief summary of Veronica's weekend, we note how the past perfect is used to describe what we did yesterday, a little while ago, last week, last month, the day before, and last year. Present perfect = auxiliaries essere/avere in the present + past participle Example with the auxiliary essere: "I went downtown." Example with the auxiliary avere: "We ordered a drink." How are the past participles of regular verbs formed? Verbs ending in -are = -ato (e.g., Incontrare = met) Verbs ending in -ere = -uto (e.g., Ricevere = received) Verbs ending in -ire (both those conjugated as "dormire" and those conjugated as "finire") = -ito (e.g., Finire = finished) Caution! If the auxiliary is essere, the participle varies according to gender and number, while if the auxiliary is avere, the participle does not change.
