The secret Nazi expeditions of the Ahnenerbe were the Third Reich's biggest secret during World War II. Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS, founded the institution in 1935 to fabricate a history that would prove the Aryan race was the origin of all civilizations. Its first president had been committed to a psychiatric hospital for delusions of grandeur. Wolfram von Sievers, its secretary general, was the only one executed at the Nuremberg Doctors' Trial. Of 137 academicians, only one paid with his life. The president resumed teaching in Munich and died at the age of 89. The Nazi expedition to Tibet photographed 42,000 images and measured 400 people skull by skull in Lhasa. Bruno Beger used the same cranial measurement forms at Auschwitz that he had used in the Himalayas. The eighty-six selected prisoners were transferred to Natzweiler-Struthof and gassed with cyanide in Nazi medical experiments to preserve their bodies. Their remains were discovered during renovations in the basement of the Anatomical Institute in Strasbourg. The Spear of Destiny, which Hitler contemplated for hours in his youth in a glass case in Vienna and which Himmler transferred to the Reich in 1938, was authenticated by the Ahnenerbe as a genuine relic. Otto Rahn, the philologist hired to search for Hitler's Holy Grail, was found dead in the snow of the Austrian Tyrol in 1939 without a death certificate.
