Cause: Calcium deficiency linked to irregular irrigation. Soil too dry and then overwatered. Too compacted, too salty. Exposure to hot, dry winds. Deficiency or excess of another element related to calcium (magnesium, selenium, phosphorus). Treatment: Use automatic watering and mulch. Choose resistant varieties. Elongated varieties like the Andean hornwort are more susceptible to black bottom. In acidic soil (recognizable thanks to bio-indicator plants or if you have soil highly enriched with fresh organic matter), add calcium without excess (wood ash in the soil, crushed eggshells, limestone pebbles as mulch, skimmed milk as a foliar spray (because calcium is not very mobile in the soil) in the morning (and this will also be effective against powdery mildew (anhydrous calcium chloride for professionals). Milk (like sage, horsetail, or nettle) are elicitors, molecules capable of stimulating natural defenses (NDS), like a vaccine. Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate, 5 g/l) are often recommended but are only useful in cases of magnesium deficiency (pale green leaves). Calcium is used to build plant cells, while Magnesium is used to produce chlorophyll.
