El yacimiento de Santa María de Abajo (Carranque, Toledo) | Hispania Nostra
Archaeological excavations and research conducted over more than a decade have established the settlement of Santa María de Abajo (Carranque) as a key site for understanding various aspects of Roman land occupation and exploitation, as well as the transition between Antiquity and the Middle Ages in the central Iberian Peninsula. We present the main results of this research, paying particular attention to oil and wine production, the use of marble as a prestige symbol among the Late Roman aristocracy, and the material evidence of occupation during the Visigothic and Andalusian periods at the site.
