Einhand über den Ärmelkanal: Von Dunkerque nach Dover

In this leg of my journey, I'm sailing with Paikea from Dunkirk in France to Dover in England. Sailing my own boat across the English Channel to England has long been a dream of mine. Last year it didn't work out. This time, a weather window finally presents itself, even if the start isn't exactly straightforward. The route is about 45 nautical miles long. Because of the traffic separation scheme in the Channel, you can't simply sail directly from Dunkirk to Dover. I first continue along the French coast towards Calais and then cross the traffic separation scheme at as close to a right angle as possible. The day has almost everything: a good breeze at the beginning, waves off the coast, later decreasing winds, many ships, motoring through the traffic separation scheme, radio contact with freighters, and finally, the white cliffs of Dover. After about 10 to 11 hours, I moor in Dover, tired but happy. A little dream of mine has come true. It wasn't quite that simple to enjoy fish and chips and my first pint in England. First, I received a visit from two Border Control officers. The boat was inspected and searched for two hours. The reason: I had filled out the required customs declaration, the Pleasure Craft Report, in Dunkirk, but hadn't sent it off before setting sail. The next day, I finally had a proper English breakfast. Afterwards, I took a walk through Dover and up to the white cliffs. From the top, you can see the harbor, the marina, and the entrance to Dover from a completely different perspective. Once there, I treated myself to a break in Mrs. Knott's Tea Room and enjoyed the view of the coast. ...
