In this video, we'll look at all the Melanochromis fish I have in my aquarium. I acquired three species: Melanochromis auratus / Golden Parrotfish; Melanochromis Maingano; and Melanochromis johann. All Melanochromis species are African lake cichlids, also known as mbuna. These fish are striking in their coloring, shape, and size. Melanochromis have an elongated body with a rounded head. Typically, in an aquarium, the fish grows to 10-11 cm. They have a small mouth and eyes with golden irises. Melanochromis auratus – males are 11-12 cm long, while females are slightly smaller. The male's body is dark (brown, sometimes black) with two horizontal blue stripes, one narrower than the other. The fish's back has a golden hue. The dorsal fin is grayish with a yellowish or bluish tint. The anal fin is black with a light spot and a blue border. Females have a golden body with two brown or black stripes. The dorsal fin also has a dark brown stripe. There are black spots on the tail. Melanochromis maingano – Grows up to 10 cm. Males have a bright blue body with two light blue longitudinal stripes and the same blue lines on the dorsal fin, along with a dark belly. Conversely, females have a light belly and a predominantly light color with dark horizontal stripes. Melanochromis johani is distinguished by the black body of males and two light blue horizontal stripes. Females are golden-orange, and males are the same color until they reach maturity at 10 months.
