I visited Ryuzugataki Falls, one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. I was incredibly excited by the sheer power of the male waterfall and my first-ever visit to the "behind the waterfall." It was a truly wonderful experience. I didn't see any connection between the legend of the famous horse and the waterfall's name, so I looked up the origin of the name. It seems there's no particular connection between the legend of the famous horse and the waterfall's name. I'd like to visit other "Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan" in the future. [Origin of the Name of Ryuzugataki Falls] During the Nara period, there was a monk named Gyoki. While traveling, he saw purple clouds drifting near the foot of what is now Entsuji Temple in Tane. He climbed up and saw a great dragon lying on the mountain, spewing mist towards the foot of the mountain. He followed the dragon and arrived at "Ryuzugataki Falls." The dragon had its body submerged in the waterfall basin and its head inside a cave to cool itself. Gyoki, sensing a strong spiritual energy at this waterfall, immediately retrieved a stone from the pool below, carved a statue of Batō Kannon (Horse-Headed Kannon), and enshrined it there.
