"What's your favorite building in the city?" is what I've been asked most since I published the book "São Paulo nas Alturas," a lengthy study of São Paulo's most notable period of architectural production. It's hard to choose. After hundreds of visits, interviews, research, and decades of post-occupation analysis, there's a lot to be learned from these city classics. The resilient and creative materials, the invitation for artists and landscapers to participate in the projects, the attention to sunlight, ventilation, thermal and acoustic comfort, and even the floor plan design make them so superior. I couldn't include all the buildings I love, of course, but I tried to create a diverse selection: from buildings with apartments that look like mansions to those with only one bedroom and living room, to those housing units of varying sizes. Overall, they make the city more beautiful and intriguing. Unlike other products of human creativity, which, if bad, can be relegated to a drawer, a warehouse, or oblivion, a building will remain in everyone's landscape for years and years, whether we like it or not. Better to add to it. Congratulations to the building managers, caretakers, and condominium owners who maintained these gems and who have certainly resisted misguided renovations that would cheapen what is unique.
