Zagrałem na ręcznie wykonanym dulcimerze nastrojonym tak jak robiła to Ritchie. Ania nastroiła gitarę do double drop D, co świetnie pasuje do utworów modalnych. "Shady Grove" to dla mnie fragment żywej historii ludzi, którzy przechowywali melodie w pamięci aby przekazać je kolejnym pokoleniom. "Shady Grove" is one of the most recognisable folk songs from Appalachia. Its murky roots come all the way from anglo-american oral tradition. It speaks of love and longing for a mysterious girl called Shady Grove. Like most mountain folk songs it has been done in many versions. The melody is modal which brings out the raw and archaic sound. Hearing this song we are reminded of Jean Ritchie - a folk singer and researcher from Kentucky, often called "mother of folk". Her rendition of this piece still inspire enthusiasts of Appalachian music. We tried to keep the soul of these old times while working on our version. I played a handmade dulcimer tuned the same way as Ritchie tuned hers. Ania tuned her guitar to double drop D which perfectly suits modal music. "Shady Grove" is a piece of history kept alive by people wanting to pass it on to the next generations.
