Short Story Picture Book 26: What Men Live By - Leo Tolstoy What do people live by? Is it money? Is it power? Or is it their own ability and effort? We worry a great deal as we go through life. Worries about making a living tomorrow, worries about money, worries about our future, worries about family, and even worries about friends. Sometimes, these worries are so overwhelming that the world seems to be filled with anxiety. However, the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy offered a surprisingly simple yet profound answer to this question long ago: “People live by love.” ‘What Men Live By’ is the story of Semyon, a poor shoemaker, and Mikhail, a mysterious stranger. Semyon’s small act of kindness, as he could not turn away from a man freezing to death, saves a life. Matryona, who initially expressed anger and complained, also chooses love by offering a piece of warm bread. And as time passes, that small act of love reveals an even greater truth. Three important questions appear in this work. What is in the human heart? What is forbidden to a human being? What does a person live by? As Mikhail lives in the human world, he comes to realize the answers to these questions one by one. He realizes that love exists within the human heart, that a person cannot know their own future, and that ultimately, a person lives by love. We often think that we live by our own strength. However, if we look back deeply, we too have been able to come this far thanks to someone's love. The care of parents, the encouragement of friends, the teachings of teachers, and the kindness of strangers have come together to shape our lives. We are not beings who live alone, but beings connected to one another. In particular, the most touching part of this work is the image of the woman who raised orphaned twins as if they were her own children. She is neither a special hero nor a wealthy person. She simply did not turn a blind eye to these poor children. However, it is precisely such ordinary love that changes a person's life and makes the world a little warmer. In this picture book, we sought to capture the warm hearts of the people alongside the simple scenery of a Russian countryside village. In snow-covered roads, small cottages, dinners by the fireplace, and the smiles of angels, we discover the most beautiful power that humans possess. I hope that those of you reading this book will take a moment to reflect on this question: "What am I living for?" I also hope you will become someone who reaches out a helping hand when others are struggling. For a single act of kindness can become a miracle that changes the world for someone. Through this work, Tolstoy tells us that people do not live by money, nor by power, nor by perfectly preparing for the future. Instead, he tells us that people live by cherishing and loving one another. That truth remains unchanged even now, after more than a hundred years have passed.
