Global Water Bankruptcy: Living Beyond our Hydrological Means in the Post-Crisis Era
In this webinar hosted by the Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) at the University of Arizona in collaboration with the Women in Water Diplomacy Network, Prof. Kaveh Madani, Director of the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), explores the concept of Global Water Bankruptcy. Drawing on findings from the landmark 'Global Water Bankruptcy Report', Prof. Madani discusses how decades of pressure on rivers, aquifers, and freshwater ecosystems have pushed many water systems beyond recovery. He examines the challenges of addressing water bankruptcy in a post-crisis world and highlights the untapped potential of water as a catalyst for peace, security, and environmental sustainability. Prof. Madani is a globally recognized environmental scientist, policy expert, and the 2026 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate. He currently leads UNU-INWEH, the United Nations University's institute focused on water, environment, and health. Learn more about UNU-INWEH: https://inweh.unu.edu
