Trump confident over Iran deal at G7 summit, but Vance says 'important details' yet to be finalized

Washington and Tehran are on the brink of taking a significant step toward peace by signing a memorandum of understanding that will kick off 60 days of further negotiations. Fundamental disagreements still need to be sorted out before the Iran war officially concludes. Vice President JD Vance said he expected the text of the memorandum, which has already been signed digitally, would be released this week. A formal signing ceremony is planned for Friday in Geneva. Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner will lead the American delegation. “The agreement is fundamentally built around a two-step verification process," Vance said. “We say to the Iranians, ‘You are welcome to have access to an unsanctioned economy. You’re welcome to be invited into the world economy, but only if you honor the commitments that you make in this agreement.'” Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said, "What has been agreed upon is an important step toward stopping the war and beginning negotiations, and a final agreement has yet to take shape." The give-and-take of nuclear inspections in Iran and the United States lifting sanctions and unfreezing assets has already prompted conflicting statements from Washington and Tehran. Vance said Iran "doesn't get a dime" unless they fulfill their obligations. Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson claimed, "America has pledged" to release frozen Iranian assets and pay Iran for "reconstruction and compensation for losses." Then, there's the matter of how the Strait of Hormuz will operate post-war. Before the war, the trade route was unimpeded. “Our expectation is that the strait is going to be reopened in a toll-free way for the long term. And that’s the sort of thing that we’re going to figure out in these technical negotiations. You know, there are a lot of very important details to figure out that we’re actually going to sit at the table and discuss together and figure out a path forward on these details," Vance said.
