Turning Colour Play Into Sketchbook Paintings | Part Two
In this second part of my Colour Play Sketchbook series, I’m taking one colour play sketch palette and using it to create two completely different sketchbook paintings. Starting with a colour palette inspired by an art reference book, I adjust and develop the colours to make the palette feel more personal to me... introducing brighter tones, layering mixed media supplies, testing mark making, and exploring how the colours respond together across the page. Using my DIY view finder, I then zone into different areas within the colour play sketch to focus on different colour balances and compositions, using those sections as inspiration for both a layered pheasant sketch and a mixed media still life painting. This playful sketchbook process has become such an important part of my art practice because it allows me to experiment with colour, supplies, layering, and ideas in a much more relaxed and exploratory way without too much pressure.
