Harold Macmillan Faces Pressure to Resign in Rare Interview (1963)
On 28 June 1963, Harold Macmillan sat down with ITN’s Alastair Burnet to discuss his position as UK Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party. Burnet pressed MacMillian about whether he would continue as Tory leader ahead of the general election. MacMillian responded with vague answers, citing his health would be the deciding factor on his next career moves. Months later, in October, he resigned as Prime Minister stating it was due to a prostate health concern. Despite his health issues resulting in a quick recovery, Macmillan took it as an opportunity to exit an increasingly volatile political position. Macmillan’s role as PM was tainted by the Profumo affair, a scandal that catastrophically damaged the reputation of his government and leadership. #itnarchive #ukhistory #1960s #ukpolitics #archivefootage #rareinterview #HaroldMacmillan #conservativeparty #coldwar #1960sbritain #primeminister To license the footage featured in this clip, follow the link below: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/search/...
