John Cage 101 (1988)
BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Royal Albert Hall 17.08.2012 The orchestra is divided in 3 'groups' each producing a different kind of music. The strings, along with the clarinets and flutes, play sustained tones, quietly and full of imperfections. The brasses and double-reeds interrupt twice with a blast of sound, once at the beginning of the piece and once towards the end. The percussion instruments, some of them quite exotic, play notes that are scattered all over the entire duration of the work. 101 should be performed without conductor, although the conductor will coach the orchestra at rehearsals. The work was composed, using flexible time-brackets. There is no overall score, only parts.
