SATURDAY 15 JULY 1995 • VAN GOGHZAAL • The Hague, The Natherlands Thomas Lee Flanagan (March 16, 1930 – November 16, 2001) was an American jazz pianist. He is best known for his long collaboration with jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald. He also played on a number of legendary records such as John Coltrane's Giant Steps and Sonny Rollins' Saxophone Colussus. The Tommy Flanagan Trio consisted of Flanagan himself, bassist Wilbur Little and legendary drummer Elvin Jones. In 1957 their first album was released: Tommy Flanagan Trio Overseas. Later, Flanagan's trio often accompanied Ella Fitzgerald at her performances. They also went into the studio together. From 1975 Flanagan mainly released albums as a leader. He formed a new trio with Tal Farlow and Red Mitchell. Although Flanagan never became well known and was not known as an innovator, he is still seen as an important pianist who influenced many others. His style is mainly described as very musical and contained all the jazz ingredients: swing, blues, harmonic refinement. Flanagan was nominated four times for Grammys, twice for best jazz performance as a group and twice as a soloist.
