Tanzania's Foreign Minister Mahmoud Kombo Thabit has defended his government’s handling of post-election unrest and a nationwide internet shutdown, following reports that scores of people have been killed in protests after this week’s vote. The minister says the government cannot yet confirm how many people have been killed or injured in the violence that erupted after the general election. Opposition groups claim hundreds have been killed, while the UN says at least ten people have died since protests began on voting day.
