It is most commonly seen between the third and fourth toes. Patients often describe their discomfort as feeling like there's a stone in their shoe or their sock is folded. Morton's neuroma results from the thickening of the tissues surrounding the sensory nerves supplying the toes, which puts pressure on these nerves. This can manifest as a sharp, burning pain in the front of the foot, along with stinging, burning, or numbness in the affected toes. It's been noted that wearing high heels is a significant contributing factor in most women who develop Morton's neuroma, and that flatter, wider shoes often alleviate the symptoms. Furthermore, repetitive trauma in running sports, wearing tight shoes, and activities that put pressure on the toes, such as skiing, are known to predispose or facilitate the development of Morton's neuroma. Furthermore, existing foot deformities such as pes planus (flat feet), pes cavus (excessive arch), and hammertoe can also be considered predisposing factors for the development of Morton's neuroma. During the examination, applying pressure to the affected area provokes pain and aids in diagnosis. Radiographic examinations can first rule out other causes of pain, such as stress fractures, using plain radiographs. Diagnosis is made by observing the nerve thickening in the painful area with ultrasound and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Treatment begins with changing ill-fitting shoes and using arch-supporting insoles. For those who don't see any benefit, steroid injections can be tried in the painful area. If nonsurgical methods fail, the nerve is compressed or the thickened portion is removed. The surgery is performed through an incision on the foot; this means no incision is made on the sole of the foot, and patients are allowed to walk on the ground afterward.
