The potential shift to a 6-to-1 work schedule could increase trade costs by more than 20%, according to a study by the São Paulo Federation of Commerce. In the program "Mercado," economist André Saconato, advisor to FecomercioSP, explains that the low productivity of Brazilian workers (around US$24 per hour, compared to almost US$100 in the United States) exacerbates the impact, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. Since the sector is labor-intensive, the reduction in working hours could mean layoffs, more informality, and even price increases passed on to consumers.
