VFL Round 2, 1989 - Geelong vs West Coast - (Kardinia Park) - First Half

VFL Round 2, 1989 - Geelong vs West Coast - (Kardinia Park) - First Half Channel 7 Telecast Sunday 9th April, 1989 Commentators: Peter Landy, Peter McKenna Special Comments: Ross Glendinning A rare win for the Cats against West Coast. Just their second after defeating the Eagles in their first encounter in 1987 and their last victory against the new side until Round 4, 1992 when Geelong came to Subiaco and Gary Ablett put on a clinic playing in the centre for his 150th league match. On this day he was stationed on the half-back flank which was where he remained until Round 6 when he was brought forward to the wing to match Hawthorn's Robert DiPierdomenico. Under new coach Malcolm Blight, this was Geelong's first home and away win for season 1989 after going down to North Melbourne at the MCG by 2 points, 18.17 (125) to 17.21 (123). Paul Couch got the 3 votes on this occasion (he'd get a few more throughout the year) while Garry Hocking and Dwayne Russell got the 2 and 1 respectively. 5 goals to Darren Morgan, 4 to Bill Brownless and a whole host of 3s while both Michael Schulze and Gary Ablett snuck down from defence to get singles. Chris Mainwairing and Don Pyke could hold their heads high at the final siren but overall this was a pretty dismal season for the West Coast.
