Gardening in the Golden Hour | Roses, Sweet Peas & Flowers for the House
I've been putting off the garden jobs all week. The weather has been stormy, the roses have had a bit of a battering with petals all over the lawn. But the rain that came yesterday made today perfect for getting on with it all because weeding after the rain is so much easier. In this week's Ask Charlie we're gardening together. I'll walk you through deadheading roses and why it genuinely matters, how to remove tomato side shoots, the best time to tackle weeding, training sweet peas up a frame, spotting and removing rose suckers, and a word or two on box hedge now that Derby Day is behind us. None of it is complicated, it's just a matter of knowing what to look for, and once you do, these jobs become genuinely satisfying. There's also a quiet moment I wanted to share. I planted two rose beds at our old house in memory of my mother. The new owners sent me a photograph recently. The roses have been moved to a new spot in the garden and they are absolutely thriving. That was lovely to receive. We finish by picking flowers for two simple arrangements for the house. Roses, catmint, a little fennel. Just the sort of thing that makes a room feel like home. If you're just starting out or working with a small space, I hope this gives you a little encouragement. I started with a window box many years ago.
