Twitter @juangangel Cucumis melo, better known as melon, is a monoecious herbaceous plant with creeping stems. It is cultivated for its fruit, a summer-season peponoid berry with a high water content and a sweet taste. Melons were already cultivated in Ancient Egypt during the 3rd millennium BC, and their cultivation extends to most continents. The fruit's shape ranges from spherical to ellipsoidal. Banana melons have undulations that make them resemble a pumpkin. Their size depends on the variety and growing conditions. Thus, there are small melons weighing around 400 g and very large ones that can weigh 20 kg or more. The stem is cylindrical, 1 to 3 m tall, with a spike-shaped terminal inflorescence composed of bisexual flowers. The seed is a caryopsis about 4 mm in diameter. It has inflorescences in panicles and 3 mm-long, spherical, and oblong seeds, black, reddish, and yellowish in color. It has a root system that can reach depths of 2 m in permeable soil. The flowers have stamens and pistils. In the most commonly used varieties, fruit weights range from over half a kilo to less than five. The color of the skin and pulp varies depending on the variety. The skin can be white, gray, greenish, or yellow, and has a smooth, rough, or reticulated texture. The pulp is aromatic, with a soft texture, and various colors: yellow, green, pink, and intermediate shades. In the center, there is a cavity containing many seeds coated with a sticky substance. It has a high percentage of water (90%), low calorie content (34 per 100 g) and sodium (16 mg), and almost 1 g of fiber, which provides satiety.
