Sunday at Soupage Santé On the agenda today, I'm going to tell you why and how to prune your cucurbits. We'll see why pruning cucurbits is essential for bountiful harvests, then I'll explain how to prune each type of cucurbit. Next, I'll share my tips for keeping your cucurbit plants healthy, and finally, I'll give you a health overview by providing the nutritional composition of cucurbits. In this video, we'll be talking about gherkins, cucumbers, zucchini, and squash (pumpkin, butternut, etc.). Pruning cucurbits is an often-neglected practice, but it offers many advantages. 1. Pruning stimulates fruit growth. By reducing the number of branches, the plant concentrates its energy on fewer fruits, resulting in larger and more flavorful ones. 2. It also improves aeration. Better air circulation reduces the risk of fungal diseases. 3. Pruning also makes harvesting easier. A well-pruned plant is easier to manage and harvest. 4. Finally, pruning optimizes space. By pruning, you control the shape and size of the plant, which is particularly useful in small gardens. Gherkins and cucumbers: Gherkins don't necessarily need pruning except to improve air circulation or prevent disease. For cucumbers, pruning is essential for fruit production. Prune the top stem when the plant has 4 to 5 true leaves. When there are 2 main stems, each with at least 6 leaves, prune each stem after the 4th leaf. With these successive prunings, you will obtain 8 branches, 4 on the initial stems. When there are 4 to 5 fruits, prune the tops of the stem tips, 1 to 2 leaves above the fruits. Prune any side stems that aren't bearing fruit or flowers; this encourages the plant to produce more fruit. You should also remove any yellowing leaves to keep the plant healthy and vigorous. Zucchini: Non-vining zucchini varieties don't need pruning to develop, except to allow for good air circulation. For other varieties, remove the lower leaves. This improves air circulation and reduces the risk of disease. Prune the main stems when they are between 40 and 60 cm long by cutting off the tips. Also prune the secondary stems when the plant becomes too dense. Pinch the secondary stems to control growth; pinching means cutting off the tips. Zucchini should be pruned regularly, about every 2 to 3 weeks, to stimulate the growth of new shoots and thus encourage fruit formation. For squash: When the squash or other cucurbits have reached 4 or 5 true leaves, prune them after the second leaf. Next, identify the main and secondary stems. The main stems are the sturdiest and longest. If you have side shoots without fruit—basically, stems growing from the main stem on the sides—prune them after the 5th leaf, when they have about 8 leaves. If you have fruit on the side shoots, prune the stem 2 leaves beyond the fruit. Once the plant has produced four or five fruits, pinch off the tip of the main stem. Furthermore, expect a maximum of 8 to 10 fruits per plant for mini squash, and 5 to 6 fruits per plant for regular squash. Beyond that point, the plant will struggle to produce good-sized fruit; there will be many, but not a great quantity, and they may even end up rotting on the plant. Remember to remove dead and diseased leaves to prevent disease and promote better air circulation. My tips for a bountiful harvest of cucurbits are: 1. Water regularly. Avoid wetting the leaves. 2. Use organic mulch to retain soil moisture and warmth. 3. Regularly check your plants to quickly detect signs of disease or pests. 4. Enrich the soil. 5. Plant flowers like nasturtiums nearby. Until the next video, happy gardening! Take care of yourself and remember: your diet is your first medicine. #gardening #vegetablegarden #vegetablegarden #gardeningplants #garden #organicvegetablegarden #allotment #gardening #gardener #gardentips #gardeningtips #zucchini #zucchini #pumpkin #pumpkins #pruning 00:00 Introduction 01:03 Why prune cucurbits? 02:12 How to prune gherkins and cucumbers 04:45 How to prune zucchini 06:36 How to prune squash 08:18 Tips for bountiful harvests 11:19 Nutrition and health
