Called the "Queen of Tejano Music," her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American artists of the late 20th century . In 2020, Billboard magazine ranked her third on its list of "Greatest Latin Artists of All Time," based on the Latin American Albums and Latin American Songs charts. The media dubbed her the " Tejano Madonna " for her fashion choices. She is also among the most influential Latin artists of all time, and is credited with catapulting the Tejano genre into the mainstream . As the youngest daughter in the Quintanilla family, she debuted on the music scene as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos , which also included her older siblings, A.B. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. In the 1980s, she was often criticized and denied bookings in Texas venues for performing Tejano music —a genre dominated by men. However, her popularity grew after winning the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, an award she would win nine consecutive times. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and released her self-titled debut album that same year, with her brother becoming her primary music producer and songwriter. Selena released Entre a mi mundo (1992), which reached number one on Billboard's U.S. Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. The album's commercial success led music critics to call it the "breakthrough" recording of her career. One of its singles, " Como la flor ," became one of her most popular signature songs . Live! (1993) won the Best Mexican/American Album award at the 1994 Grammy Awards , becoming the first recording by a female Tejano artist to do so. In 1994, she released Amor prohibido , which became one of the best-selling Latin albums in the United States . It was critically acclaimed as ushering in the first commercial era of Tejano music, as it became one of the most popular subgenres at the time. On March 31, 1995, Selena was shot and killed at the age of 23 by Yolanda Saldívar , her friend and former manager of her Selena Etc. boutiques . Saldívar was cornered by police as she attempted to flee and threatened suicide, but was persuaded to surrender. She was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years. Two weeks later, George W. Bush , then governor of Texas, declared April 16 as Selena Day in Texas. Her posthumous crossover album , Dreaming of You (1995), debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 , making Selena the first Latin American artist to achieve this feat. In 1997, Warner Bros. released Selena , a film about her life and career, starring a then-unknown Jennifer Lopez as Selena, catapulting Lopez to fame. In 2020, Netflix released Selena: The Series, starring Christian Serratos . Selena has sold approximately 18 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling female artists in Latin American music. The Quintanilla family appointed Yolanda Saldívar as manager of Selena's boutiques in early 1994. Eight months later, Selena named Saldívar as her registered agent in San Antonio, Texas . Following the agreement, Saldívar moved from San Antonio to Corpus Christi to be closer to Selena. In December 1994, the boutiques began experiencing difficulties after staffing levels for both stores dwindled. According to boutique staff, Saldívar frequently fired employees she disliked. Store staff consistently complained to Selena about Saldívar's behavior, but Selena dismissed the complaints, believing Saldívar would not negatively impact her fashion business. Staff members began reporting Saldívar's behavior to Abraham Quintanilla, who took the complaints seriously and told Selena to "be careful" around Saldívar and that he was not a good influence. However, Selena dismissed her father's inquiries because he had always been distrustful of people in the past. By early 1995, Selena's cousin, her fashion designer Martín Gómez, and clients expressed concerns about Saldívar's behavior and management skills. During a 1995 interview with reporters from The Dallas Morning News , Saldívar said that his devotion to Selena bordered on obsession . In January 1995, Abraham Quintanilla began receiving phone calls and letters from fans claiming they had paid Saldívar to be admitted as members of Selena's fan club and receive a package of merchandise, including a Selena cassette and a T-shirt, but received nothing. Quintanilla then began investigating and discovered that Saldívar had embezzled more than $60,000 in forged checks from both the fan club and the boutiques.
