Australia Is Tunnelling Through the Snowy Mountains to Build a $12 Billion Underground Power Station
Australia Is Tunnelling Through the Snowy Mountains to Build a $12 Billion Underground Power Station Beneath Australia’s Snowy Mountains, one of the country’s most ambitious energy projects is taking shape. Snowy 2.0 will connect the Tantangara and Talbingo reservoirs through a vast underground network, turning the mountain range into a giant pumped-hydro battery capable of storing power for the national grid. Building it requires excavating around twenty-seven kilometres of tunnels, carving enormous caverns for six generating units, installing high-pressure steel waterways, and constructing new intake structures at both reservoirs. Deep underground, massive tunnel-boring machines must cut through unstable rock, groundwater and extreme geological conditions. Join Mandarin Tech as we explore how engineers are creating a two-thousand-two-hundred-megawatt power station beneath the mountains — transforming stored water into one of Australia’s most important sources of long-duration energy.
