The plot is divided into two phases. The first takes place when Maria do Carmo Ferreira da Silva (Carolina Dieckmann), a woman from the Northeast of Brazil, abandoned by her husband, leaves with her five children from the interior of Pernambuco towards Rio de Janeiro. They arrive in Rio on the day the Institutional Act No. 5 (AI-5) is decreed. There is great turmoil in the streets of the city center, taken over by protesters and police. In the midst of the confusion, one of her children is injured by a stone. Maria do Carmo manages to take refuge with the children in an abandoned house. Nazaré (Adriana Esteves), after an argument with her lover José Carlos (Tarcísio Filho), also takes shelter there. Dressed as a nurse and with a fake pregnant belly, Nazaré promises to take care of the children while Maria do Carmo takes Reginaldo to the hospital. On the way back, however, Maria do Carmo discovers that the woman has disappeared with her newborn daughter, Lindalva. Devastated by Lindalva's kidnapping, Maria do Carmo gets lost in the streets of Rio, is mistaken for a protester and arrested, as is Dirceu de Castro (Gabriel Braga Nunes), a reporter for the Diário de Notícias newspaper, who refuses to leave the newsroom. In the second phase of the telenovela, Maria do Carmo (Susana Vieira) is a strong and successful woman and owner of the Do Carmo construction materials store. She maintains a long-standing romantic relationship with Dirceu (José Mayer) and has another admirer: the former gambling boss Giovanni Improtta (José Wilker). Lindalva, the youngest daughter stolen from Maria do Carmo and baptized as Isabel (Carolina Dieckmann), has a close relationship with Nazaré, who still lives with José Carlos and is always at odds with her stepdaughter Cláudia (Leandra Leal). The Nazaré deception begins to unravel when photographer Rodolfo (Reinaldo Gonzaga) gives Dirceu a photo of a pregnant nurse holding a baby, taken by him during the riots in downtown Rio in December 1968.
