In this video, we traced the true story hidden behind the familiar fairy tale of the brother and sister who became the sun and moon. Original texts of fairy tales and folktales around the world contain cruel and shocking content that is difficult for us to imagine. From the cannibalistic customs of Hansel and Gretel to the sexual exploitation narrative of Sleeping Beauty, Korean folktales are no exception. Among them, "The Sun and the Moon" holds the most shocking secret. Behind the brutal death of a mother who tried to save her child while having her limbs torn off one by one by a tiger lie the fear of tiger attacks during the Joseon Dynasty and the folklore of "Chang-gui." However, the real shock comes next. According to the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture and researchers of oral literature, the original form of this story hides traces of a "brother-sister marriage myth," in which the entity chasing the sister was not a tiger but her own brother. Most sun and moon myths (creation myths of the sun and moon) around the world establish the sun and moon as siblings. The Tale of the Sun and the Moon also follows this universal mythological structure, but there is one decisive difference. While roles are predetermined from the start in other myths, in The Tale of the Sun and the Moon, the younger sister voluntarily changes roles and exposes herself to strong light because she feels "ashamed." Academic analysis suggests that this unexplained "shame" is the sole remaining trace of the erasure of the taboo against incest. Although the taboo has completely disappeared through the Confucian ethics of the Joseon Dynasty, the recording methods of the Japanese colonial period, and the media coverage of textbooks and broadcasts, its traces remain in the story to this day.
