Modular model railroad layout in HO scale at the highest level of design (German model railway)

When model railroad clubs present their modular model railway layouts, it’s common for the individual modules to clash with one another, for background walls to be missing, or for model trains to run through a haphazardly assembled landscape. But at the German model railroading exhibition “Faszination Modellbahn” in Mannheim in March 2026, the model train club “HEB Hobbyeisenbahner 1983” presented a modular model railroad layout that looked like a beautiful miniature world full of life and meticulous attention to detail. The modular model train layout, built to the highest design standards in H0 scale, measures 15 x 8 meters. On the model railway layout, train traffic operates between three stations installed on the modules, with one station serving as a fiddle yard where numerous train sets are parked. In addition to typical passenger trains of the “Deutsche Bundesbahn” (German Federal Railway), these include freight trains from the 1960s. All rail vehicles feature a realistic patina. The speed of the model trains is scaled to match their real-life counterparts. Viewers will discover various scenes where creativity and an extreme attention to detail blend together, such as the soapbox race next to the large railroad bridge, the perfectly placed vegetation along the roadside and on the track bed, the harvest from realistic-looking model apple trees, a collapsed barn, the stationmaster’s office at the branch station, a painter sitting in the countryside, historic telegraph poles along the railway line, and many miniature figures telling their own stories.
