'Listening All Night to the Rain' exhibition – John Akomfrah

The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza and the TBA21Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary presents 'Listening All Night To The Rain', a new exhibition by John Akomfrah curated by Tarini Malik. The British artist reimagines his most ambitious and experimental work to date, originally commissioned by the British Council for the British Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale. This interview offers a glimpse into the making of this monumental exhibition, divided into five "cantos" where water becomes both archive and omen, carrying the legacies of empire, displacement, and resistance across time. Akomfrah invites viewers to discover a space where image, sound, and history echo each other, asking what it means to listen, truly listen, in a world built on forgetting. ‘John Akomfrah: Listening All Night to the Rain’ was commissioned by the British Council for the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, 2024. El artista británico reimagina aquí su obra más ambiciosa y experimental hasta la fecha, originalmente encargada por el British Council para el Pabellón Británico de la 60ª Bienal de Venecia. Esta entrevista ofrece una mirada al proceso de creación de esta exposición monumental, articulada en cinco “Cantos”, donde el agua se convierte en archivo y presagio, portadora de las huellas de imperios, el desplazamiento y la resistencia a través del tiempo. Akomfrah invita al público a adentrarse en un espacio donde imagen, sonido e historia resuenan entre sí, interrogando lo que significa escuchar, escuchar de verdad, en un mundo construido sobre el olvido. ‘John Akomfrah: Escuchando toda la noche la lluvia’ fue encargado por el British Council para la 60ª Exposición Internacional de Arte – La Biennale di Venezia, 2024.
