China's Toyota Kluger Challenger Driven! (BYD Sealion 8 2026 Review)

BYD is about to launch its Sealion 8, a dual-motor single-engine plug-in hybrid seven-seat SUV targeting the likes of established players such as Toyota Kluger, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mazda CX-80 and MG QS. While the pre-production example we drive here boasts around 400kW and 668Nm, the final Australian specification is confirmed at 359kW and 675Nm in ‘DMP’ all-wheel-drive guise. Performance? Zero to 100km/h in under five seconds for the high spec. A milder front-drive version bringing 205kW and 315Nm will also be offered to Aussie buyers. Here, Chasing Cars road test editor John Law takes us on a quick if deep dive into the last seven-seater to hit Down Under.
