Pickleball is a new sport currently garnering worldwide attention. A blend of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, its simplicity and depth have led to a rapid increase in the number of participants. A world championship is scheduled to be held in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, in June, spurring interest within the prefecture. For this article, we visited the Yamaguchi Pickleball Club, based in Yamaguchi City. Started by two people three years ago, the club now has approximately 150 members. The trial session on this day featured approximately 15 people, ranging in age from their 20s to 60s, who seemed to enjoy playing rallies despite being first-timers. Trial sessions for beginners are held about once a month, offering thorough instruction starting from the basics. The court is the same size as a badminton doubles court, allowing players to use the gymnasium as is. Unique rules, such as a no-entry area in front of the net and the two-bounce rule, enhance strategic play. While it's easy to get started, many players become hooked on the game's depth. The club also boasts competitive-minded players. Haruna Masuda and Eiji Yamauchi, who were selected for the Japanese national team, made the team just one year after participating in a trial event. Domestic sporting organizations are also integrating, and there's even interest in the sport being included as an official event at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. The international tournament in Yamaguchi City promises to be a rare opportunity to see top-level play up close.
