Shostakovich Symphony No.5. Kiril Kondrashin and Moscow Philharmonic - 1967.
Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 was completed in 1937 and first performed in 1938. Written during the middle of some of the most difficult years in the USSR under Stalin. The symphony was a an immediate triumph for Shostakovich, even if some Soviet authorities remained suspicious of his motives. Indeed, Shostakovich did wish to reflect some of the pathos of the Soviet people that were the result of starvation and hardship in the 1930s. Reportedly many in the audience had tears in their eyes at the conclusion of the Largo. At the premier it was given a half-hour standing ovation. It remains one of the most popular of Shostakovich's works. This is the first time this particular LP was played, as it had been sealed for over half a century.
