Merging is one of the fundamental skills of passing a road test and remaining crash free for the duration of your driving career. And because driving is a social activity, you have to work with other drivers. When you're driving along the on-ramp, activate your turn signal to indicated to other drivers that you are in fact going to merge out onto the highway, freeway or motorway. As well, the flashing light draws their attention to your vehicle. If other drivers get ample warning they will slow down or change lanes to help you merge out onto the highway, freeway or motorway. When you're advancing down the on-ramp and acceleration lane it is imperative that you match the speed of the flow of traffic on the highway, freeway or motorway, activate your signal, locate your gap and begin to move into that gap. Merging is like a "hockey stop" on ice skates! It is not a proverbial grey area - you must merge. DO NOT STOP ON THE ACCELERATION LANE!! In the video collage no driver stops on the acceleration lane. The blue car does stop, but that driver is on the on-ramp, not the acceleration lane. Once you are on the acceleration lane, you are committed and MUST merge out onto the highway, freeway or motorway.
