The Ministry of Public Health reported that 823 people committed suicide in Uruguay last year, 58 more than the previous year. This represents the highest suicide rate in the country since records began. In Latin America, Uruguay has one of the highest suicide rates, after Guyana and Suriname, at 23.3 per 100,000 inhabitants, more than double the Latin American average. The data was released on Monday, coinciding with National Suicide Prevention Day. In 2022, suicide was the leading cause of death among Uruguayans aged 15 to 44, according to the report. The most affected age group is 25 to 29. Presenting the data, Minister Karina Rando stated that the country's situation is very serious compared to the rest of Latin America. “In the rest of the Americas, the suicide rate is 9 per 100,000 inhabitants. In Uruguay in 2022, it was more than double that. We are not at all proud of this. The sustained increase in suicides has been occurring since the 1990s and has continued its steady rise.” Regarding suicide attempts, the Ministry of Public Health has registered 2,896 since November of last year, or more than ten cases per day. Half of the attempts were made by people between 15 and 29 years old, and 19% by young people between 15 and 19 years old. Treinta y Tres is the department with the highest suicide rate in the country: 37.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is followed by Maldonado and Lavalleja.
