The World's Oldest Steam Engine! Newcomen Atmospheric Engine | First Century of Steam
This is the world's oldest, fully intact steam engine! Crafted in 1712 by the ingenious Thomas Newcomen, it inspired James Watt's later work, including adding an external condenser (his most famous innovation) to this engine, to greatly increase efficiency. This engine, named Fairbottom Bobs, was put to work as a mine pump at the Conygree Coal works in Tipton, England, working tirelessly for over a century, before it was finally abandoned when the mine closed. Fortunately, it was found, rusting, by Henry Ford, who rescued this amazing piece of machinery. Join me in part 2 of this 7-part series, as we look at the industrial crisis that triggered the Industrial Revolution, filmed entirely on location. Steam power changed the world, but it didn't start the way most people think it did, and it didn't progress nearly as fast. The first effective steam engines appeared at the beginning of the 18th century with Thomas Newcomen's atmospheric steam engine, followed by the groundbreaking inventions of James Watt. Strictly limited by the capabilities of metalworking and available boiler technology of the time, these early engineers did amazing things with surprisingly little steam pressure, building massive machines that still amaze us today. Join me on this 7-part series as we look at the The First Century of Steam Power – The Atmospheric Engines. Course objectives: 1) Why did we invent steam engines? 2) How do atmospheric steam engines work? 3) How did atmospheric steam engines evolve? 4) Why does no one use atmospheric steam engines anymore?
