Ergative Verbs l Ergative Verbs in English Grammar l Ambitransitive Verbs l Middle Voice Dear Viewers , In this video I have discussed Ergative Verbs . Ergative verbs can be used in two ways - Transitive and Intransitive . The object of the transitive verb is used as the subject of the intransitive verb . Ergative Verbs basically works in two ways - 1) Doing 2) Happening 1) I broke the chair - Here 'I' is a doer who performed the task of breaking the chair . 2) The chair broke - Here the chair was not broken by anyone , the chair was broken by itself . This structure is called middle voice ( Active in structure but passive in meaning ) Ergative Verbs are different from Passive Voice . In passive voice , there is a doer by whom the work is done . No doer is seen in ergative verb . Something happens to the subject but it is not known who or what is responsible for it . N.B - It was not mentioned in class - All Ergative Verbs are Ambitransitive Verbs but all Ambitransitive Verbs are not Ergative Verbs . Watch the class carefully until the end . If there is any confusion about the class , you can let me know in the comment box .
